The short answer

• Most Tokyo clubs are 20+. A few let you in from 18 — the main two are T2 SHINJUKU and THE PINK TOKYO, both in Shinjuku. T2 does not admit high-school students, even at 18 or 19.
• Drinking is 20+ everywhere in Japan. Inside at 18 or 19 means soft drinks only, sometimes with a different wristband.
• At the door you need a government photo ID — for visitors, your physical passport. Copies and phone photos don’t count.

Entry age vs drinking age

First, the ground rule. In Japan, drinking and smoking are 20+, and that’s the same at every club. The age you can “enter,” though, is set per venue — most clubs are 20+, but some allow entry from 18.
